Suspect with a Knife
Washington State Officer draws weapon:
Comments: I have been using the TD Labs holster for almost 3 years now. I routinely, read several times per shift, have to draw my weapon and have always appreciated the holster's design and attributes.
On New Year's Eve I had an encounter that is common in police shootings and is probably no shock to most officers who have been on the job for any length of time.
I was investigating a fight disturbance on a neighborhood street and contacted a possible female participant at a home at that location.
She, a Meth head, and two male Meth heads, came to the door. She was standing directly in front of me and we were about 1.5 arms lengths apart. I saw no weapons in the hands of any of these persons and the other half of the fight was reported by a neighbor to have fled on foot.
I began asking her about the fight in the street and she denied being involved. I was explaining that I just wanted to make sure she wasn't injured when my partner leaned up near my ear and said, "big knife right there, on her right hip."
He could see about 1" of a kydex knife sheath sticking out from under her winter coat. I was still processing this information and looking for a knife and not seeing one, when she made a quick movement to her right hip area with her hand.
I still wasn't seeing a knife, and was trying to process all this information in my brain, when she made her movement to draw the weapon.
I instinctually reacted to her movement to her hip and thanks to repeatedly training in my draw and the superb design of the TD Labs holster, was able to bring my Glock up and on target quickly.
I took a step backwards with one foot while drawing my weapon to my ribcage and putting the barrel on target. As I was getting on target she dropped the knife like she had a snake in her hand and I was able to make the decision not to fire on her.
This all happened, from the time my partner mentioned the "knife" to the time she drew, then dropped the knife, in under 2 seconds. Her Meth addled brain worked well enough to realize that she shouldn't be doing this and began commenting how she "was just trying to show you my knife." She showed me hers and I showed her mine, so to speak.
That's a pretty compressed timeframe and the unique and advanced design of the TD Labs holster performed flawlessly. It allowed me to get on target very fast. My partner later commented, at choir practice, that, "he gets that gun out (expletive deleted) fast." I gave appropriate credit to his keen observation of the knife sheath, my training in my draw, and to your wonderful product.
Thanks again, and when you make a off-duty version I will be purchasing it. Get busy in the design center please.
